Food Meets EPL (Ethos, Pathos, and Logos)

Don't think food is relevant to ethos, pathos, or logos? Think again!

Ethos: This is that whole authoritative, credible, ethical part of food. I'm probably going to take my mom's advice about cooking a little more seriously than my boyfriend's, but Emeril is going to take precedence over them both. It's not that I love them less than Emeril, he's just got the creds to make my meal the best it can be!

Pathos: As a female, I am extremely familiar with this type of evidence. I am a very emotional eater, and chocolate is usually my go-to food regardless of the situation. Rappoport also touched on that fact in this week's reading.

Logos: Data, science, the things that we can't deny. I Google'd "food statistics" and found these facts and thought they were absolutely startling!

*
Almost 100 billion pounds of food is wasted in America each year
* 700 million hungry human beings in different parts of the world would have gladly accepted this food
* In 2004, requests for emergency food assistance increased by an average of 14 percent during the year, according to a 27-city study by the United States Conference of Mayors

*
America's Second Harvest (http://www.secondharvest.org/), the nation's largest network of food banks, reports that 23.3 million people turned to the agencies they serve in 2001, an increase of over 2 million since 1997. Forty percent were from working families
* 33 million Americans continue to live in households that did not have an adequate supply of food. Nearly one-third of these households contain adults or children who went hungry at some point in 2000

You can't make that stuff up, folks. Food can definitely be applied to ethos, pathos, and logos, it's not really that hard when you try!

O wow. This is sad and surprising. What's the solution? Should we find a way to recycle wasted food? Nice application. Didn't even think of the angle you took it at.

Wow. This is really interesting, and touching. I was just thinking the other day, as my mom was complaining about how many leftovers they had, that food is so... well, perishable. Though she would be glad to send me that extra food, and I, the starving college student, would be ECSTATIC to accept it, it is nearly impossible to do efficiently...

100 BILLION pounds of food???? Holy cow. That there can be used as pathos too--it sure made me feel guilty!

33 million Americans with not enough food? That is probably just the entire teenage population, it will go away.
